Wellbeing through Food Awareness |
The Candodo School Programme featuring The Gut Bug Challenge is a fun and engaging way to teach children essential life skills around the topic of Food and Nutrition. Using the colourful characters introduced as Phyto Friends children can start to learn about the special Phyto Powers that these foods have, and the affect on their health, and the challenges around eating too much processed food.

The lesson content is reinforced by pupils continuing The Gut Bug Challenge at home, and tracking the food they eat by continuing to record their progress on the tracking sheets provided in class. At the end of the project the children are encouraged to consider My Food Journey, a reflection on making better choices during the challenge and a final taste activity.

Your gut microbiome influences your overall health, both your physical and mental health. It controls your energy levels, mood, concentration, food cravings and large parts of your immune system, as well as being responsible for communications with your brain via the Gut -Brain axis. Excess sugar encourages Gut Dysbiosis, an imbalance in good and bad gut bugs in favour of the bad ones, and also promotes inflammation, which is a precursor to many diseases. For a healthy gut microbiome, eating a variety of natural foods rich in dietary fibre, such as vegetables, fruits and wholegrains is particularly important. Source: https://www.fabresearch.org/
